When is the Best Time to Get a 3D Ultrasound?

One of the most common questions we receive at My First Baby Pictures is "When is the best time to get a 3D or 4D ultrasound?"

The answer will depend on exactly what it is that you would like to see. A scan at any of the below times is always a great experience. See below for a breakdown of what to expect during an ultrasound at each week.

14 - 19 weeks

14-19 weeks is a great time to see the entire baby in the picture and watch their acrobatic skills in action. You can see baby kick, suck on their thumb, hiccup and more. During this time frame you will be able to make out that the baby has two eyes, nose, and a mouth. However, you will not see the facial composition in complete detail, meaning it will be difficult to see if baby has dad’s nose. After 16 weeks we are also able to make out the gender of the baby.

20 - 26 weeks

During the 20-26 week period you are able to see clearer facial features. Between 20 and 26 weeks we can get some really beautiful pictures of the face and there is usually enough room to see all the cute little movements that baby does in the womb.  This is often the time when we can get great videos of baby yawning, waving, or sucking their thumb.

27 - 40 weeks

At 27 weeks and beyond, baby starts to fill out and become chubby around the body and face.  You can now see very clear facial features: 'oh they have mum's lips!'. Scans at this time will usually only focus on the face as there is not normally a lot of room to see baby moving about. You can still get good pics and videos of hands and feet. If baby has moved right down it can sometimes be difficult to get good shots of their face, but with some patience and positioning good images are possible.

If you're currently pregnant in any one of the above stages you can book a 3D ultrasound online with our Mobile Service here, or at our Rozelle Studio here.
